So instead of using my money for important things like food, rent or petrol for my car, I decided on splurging on accessories for my Nintendo Wii console. The first would be the Nyko wireless sensor bar that I picked up for R300, which was really a bargain. My reason for getting one? The fact that I can now put the sensor bar wherever I want without having to worry about the flimsy, thin wire that can be broken by rampaging dogs and kids alike. Not to mention the rampant cleaning lady, who ignores the laws of physics when she cleans.

First thing you notice is the extremely odd package Nyko uses for the sensor bar. For some odd reason it reminds me of a toner cartridge for printers. Nice Nyko, pity you made it larch proof, took me 10 minutes to get it open. LOL!

Inside the package you will find the Nyko wireless sensor bar, directions on how to set it up and 4 AA batteries. I recommend reading the manual as I do with everything else to avoid those “why did I not think of that” moments.

The Nyko wireless sensor bar is a fair bit more chunky than the original sensor bar that comes with the Nintendo Wii, but thats to be expected since it now carries 4x AA batteries. It will also make it more difficult to knock it from its selected spot; you can also now use it to club someone over the head.

First nice feature found. They used to have this in all the old battery operated electronics back in the day which made removing batteries so much easier. Instead of using your fingers or some sharp foreign object to remove the batteries, you just grip the ribbon and pull and bob is your sister twice removed.

Second nice feature found. You can now set a timer that starts making one hell of a noise after either an hour or two if you forget to switch off your Nyko wireless sensor bar.

Now I can pretty much stick my sensor bar wherever I want to (yes, that sounded wrong on so many levels). It is especially nice if I want to take it to parties or a friend’s place since the only cables I have to worry about now are the AV and power cables.
Nyko Wireless Sensor Bar Features:
- Play up to 25 feet away (±7 meters for us normal folk)
- Allows for clean, easy, wire-free installation
- Powered by 4x AA batteries (included)
- Compatible with the Nintendo Wii sensor bar stand
- Ideal for wall-mounted flat screens
- Built-in audible alarm to remind you to turn off device when not in use
- Power saver automatically powers down the device
I was really surprised by the quality that went into making the Nyko wireless sensor bar. For R300 I was expecting something really cheap and plasticky (you know, made in fongkong type stuff), but this is really a solid piece of hardware. I notice no difference in reaction times whatsoever when playing games using the Nyko wireless sensor bar. I spent a good few hours playing Wiisports, Legend of Zelda and Okami without any issues. Not to mention the fact that installing it is a breeze, as the only thing you have to do is switch it on and it does the rest for you.
If you find that the original sensor bar that came with your Nintendo Wii is not doing it for you then, I can highly recommend getting the Nyko wireless sensor bar. Because for R300 you are most definitely getting” bang for your buck.”
