Remember postman pat? Remember how awesome you thought he was when you where younger? Remember how you sat nailed in front of the TV while pat delivered the mail through snow storms come rain come shine? Well unfortunately I have some bad news, postman pat does not work for the South African postal service…

This morning I went to pickup a package that was sent to me on the 4th of this month already, only to find out that it was not delivered to the intended destination, the local Postnet. Imagine my horror when I found out it was delivered the local post office, and our local post office has a “excellent” track record. So after showing up bright and early this morning at eight, we were told they could not help any of us why you may ask? Well due to recent thefts they lock everything in the post office vault including pc monitors, switches and of course the parcels..
And it seems that the person who holds the keys has not pitches up at work yet so as I decide to leave, this person shows up with the keys. As I was about to make a big scene showing my dissatisfaction at the bad service, this lady in front of me lets rip and I mean in a big way. And I was really glad I was standing behind her and not in front of her, or she would have eaten me for breakfast. Turns out that she works for the post office head office in Johannesburg talk about being in the wrong place at the right time.
Long story short after some searching they managed to find my package, if I did not come looking for it what would have happened with it? So being in a rush and being late for a appointment I rushed off without actually opening the package. So after said appointment I got home and finally got time to open my package, only to discover a ravaged Nintendo Gamecube game inside.

Now anyone who owns Nintendo Gamecube games or any console games for that matter would know what force is required to cause this amount of damage. Especially on these types of cases, now I have to ask what the hell where they doing with it to get this type of damage? Did they try and send is using carrier pigeon which then ended up going through a jet engine at some point in time?

Luckily the Gamecube cases are build like bricks, while the case was a total waste the game inside was still un-damaged and that is what matters most. I will find a replacement case and restore it to its former glory later this evening. Now my question is what if this was some loved ones package that traveled halfway across the world. Only to be smashed by some un-caring fuckwit and with the holiday season coming up I can only see this happening more.

I was thinking of writing some long winded letter to the post office and telling them how disappointed I am with there service. But I figured they are to busy bragging about there profits going up and being voted the best company in 2008, pity everything else is going the opposite direction their profits is going. So instead I am bitching and moaning here and warning people to package there goods, even more securely especially during this festive season.
I wonder if anyone at the Post Office ever reads those letters of complaint that they get sent – or do they just steam the postage off to see if they can reuse it perhaps? :)
Sheesh you’re lucky a package filled with tea that was sent to my mom was broken open to see what was inside.
I guess they couldn’t read the package label….
Yeah, got to love the postal service. I’ve had deliveries consistently sent to the wrong area, sometimes the wrong province (!) I only managed to figure out wtf was going on because of t.he tracking I had on the parcels.
There’s a reason why Amazon refuses to ship stuff to you via the SA Postal Service. I wonder what it could be…
I love the way you started this post. I actually sat for a minute or two remembering how as a kid I wanted to be a postman when I grew up :)
I feel your pain dude :( As Craig says, I wonder if they ever read letters of complaint…
I once bought a graphics card which they sent to some random Post-Office and then they made it seem like it was my fault somehow! I wanted to play Oblivion so badly on that day and then I had to wait till the following day :(
LOL@Comments, well I have sent and received more package but not at the local post office but the postnet with no issues whatsoever.
